Sam Fender gives £25,000 Mercury Prize to support smaller venues
Sam Fender gave his full £25,000 Mercury Prize to The Music Venue Trust, aiding grassroots venues where 43.8% reported losses in 2024, charity data shows.
- On October 16, Sam Fender, the singer from North Shields, donated his £25,000 Mercury Prize to the Music Venue Trust at a ceremony in Newcastle.
- Explaining his reasons, Sam Fender said `I wouldn’t be doing what I am doing today if it wasn’t for all the gigs I played around the North East, and beyond, when I was starting out` and called grassroots venues vital yet struggling.
- Building on past donations, Fender previously contributed 100,000 from his 2024 arena tour to an MVT fund supporting 38 grassroots venues.
- The Music Venue Trust said the donated funds will support ongoing work to protect grassroots venues, after last week saving two venues under the Own Our Venues initiative.
- Since 2023, more than 150 closures and 25 in 2024 reflect strain on venues, while a 2024 Music Venue Trust report found a 0.48% profit margin and 43.8% losses.
