Germany to expel Russian diplomat over espionage accusations

Thursday, the German government announced the expulsion of a Russian diplomat accused of spying, with officials saying the individual acted on behalf of Russia.
Federal prosecutors say the suspected network dates back to November 2023, alleging the woman contacted a man at the Russian Embassy who worked for Russian intelligence, supplied war-related information, and arranged visits under aliases.
The main suspect, a German-Ukrainian dual citizen, was arrested in Berlin on Wednesday, and Germany's Defense Ministry said the probe involves two former military employees, including one recently retired officer.
The Federal Foreign Office summoned Russia's ambassador on Wednesday to inform him of the expulsion, officials said, adding the move deepens already strained ties between Berlin and Moscow.
Berlin framed the expulsion as a zero-tolerance stance on diplomatic spying, with Germany's Foreign Ministry posting it `doesn’t tolerate espionage in Germany, still less under the disguise of diplomatic status`.
