Russian soldiers tell BBC they saw fellow troops executed on commanders' orders
Four Russian soldiers revealed commanders ordered executions and used torture to enforce deadly assaults, with UK Ministry of Defence estimating 900-1,500 Russian casualties daily in 2025.
- Four Russian soldiers told the BBC they witnessed extreme brutality on their own side, including commanders allegedly executing troops who refused orders. Two of the men said they personally saw soldiers shot for disobedience, while another described seeing the bodies of about 20 troops killed by their own comrades.
- The soldiers described harsh punishment for refusing what they called near-suicidal “meat storm” assaults, in which waves of troops are sent repeatedly to the front lines. They claimed dissenters were tortured, electrocuted, starved, or forced into attacks without weapons. One man said he was the only survivor from a group of 79 mobilized soldiers.
- Speaking from hiding outside Russia, the men detailed conditions they say are concealed amid tight domestic control over dissent. While Moscow does not publish official casualty figures, the UK’s Ministry of Defence estimates that more than 1.2 million Russian troops have been killed or wounded since February 2022.
