Russia blocks access to US children's gaming platform Roblox
Russia's communications watchdog cited extremist and LGBT content risks to children’s moral development in blocking Roblox, which had 70 million mobile installs in Russia, according to Appfigures.
- On Dec 3, Russia blocked access to the U.S. children's gaming platform Roblox, with Roskomnadzor accusing it of distributing extremist materials and `LGBT propaganda`.
- Roskomnadzor announced on Wednesday that it found Roblox rife with inappropriate content that can harm the spiritual and moral development of children.
- Roblox averaged 151.5 million daily active users in the third quarter of this year and says it uses AI tools, moderation teams, law enforcement and child safety experts to protect users.
- Roblox Corp did not immediately respond to a request for comment, as Roskomnadzor last week threatened to block WhatsApp completely, showing active regulatory pressure.
- In 2023, Russia designated the `international LGBT movement` as extremist, and last year Duolingo deleted references to `non-traditional sexual relations` after warnings from Roskomnadzor.
