Recall issued for baby formulas amid toxin fears

  • Wednesday, Nestle SA announced precautionary recalls after tests detected cereulide, triggering infant formula withdrawals affecting more than 60 countries from Nestle SA, Danone SA, and Groupe Lactalis.
  • Lab analysis found contamination in the arachidonic acid oil , an additive formula companies use to mimic breast milk, with cereulide produced by Bacillus cereus bacteria resisting heat and filtration.
  • Detecting and proving cases is difficult because toxin traces may be missing or too low, and Ms Monika Ehling‑Schulz says incidence is nearly 100 per cent in outbreaks causing nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea.
  • French health authorities opened a probe after a baby died following recalled milk consumption, while manufacturers say there are no confirmed illnesses and Philipp Navratil, Chief Executive Officer, apologised for parental concern.
  • Analysts at Jefferies estimate the recalls will cost US$1.9 billion, though Nestle said affected formulas represent under 0.5 per cent of sales and rivals risk reputational damage.
