Quebecer graduating from Polytechnique with service dog who attended every class
Kopeck helped Bal manage autism and ADHD, and more than 1,000 students used accessibility services at Polytechnique this school year.
On May 22, 2026, Bal graduated from Polytechnique alongside Kopeck, his service dog, after the pair became a familiar sight throughout his bachelor's degree program.
Before achieving his degree, Bal overcame challenges with ADHD and other diagnoses affecting focus and writing, though his childhood interest in robotics provided a "fire" for science that sustained him.
Kopeck remains with Bal 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing passive support by recognizing stress and nudging him. Bal said, "So having the dog helped me protect myself, preserve myself, and helped me love myself."
More than 1,000 students at Polytechnique used accessibility services this year, up from 40 fifteen years ago, with an adviser describing Bal and Kopeck as "champions" of these services due to their campus popularity.
Bal is job-hunting with the goal of becoming a member of Quebec's order of engineers, with Kopeck continuing to support him as he pursues this professional milestone.
