Home Secretary Extends UK Pub Hours for World Cup Knockout Matches
Pubs in England and Wales can stay open until 1am or 2am during World Cup knockouts if England progresses, supporting local businesses and community spirit, British Beer and Pub Association said.
- The UK government will allow pubs to remain open until 1am for knockout matches and 2am for 10pm kick-offs, with Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood approving the extension, starting before the tournament begins on June 11.
- Citing later kick-offs, Ms Mahmood said fans should not miss decisive moments, adding, `With later kick-offs at this year's World Cup, we don't want pubs to blow the final whistle before the winning goal.`
- Permitted hours include 1am and 2am for pubs in England and Wales, with temporary licences available for very late kick-offs beyond 2am.
