Prostate cancer screening should not be offered to most men in the UK, say government advisers
The UK National Screening Committee advises biennial prostate cancer screening only for men aged 45-61 with BRCA1/2 mutations, affecting about 3 in 1,000 men nationwide.
- On Friday the 28th of November 2025 the UK National Screening Committee issued a draft recommending no population-wide prostate cancer screening and targeted testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 carriers aged 45.
- Because the PSA test lacks precision, the committee judged it cannot reliably separate aggressive from indolent cancers and screening harms many, with 200 screened benefiting one and treating at least 10 to help one.
- The TRANSFORM trial, launched last week, will compare MRI and genetics, aims to report early results in about two years, and plans at least 1 in 10 invited men will be Black to improve representation.
- The draft immediately triggered a three-month consultation as responses split: Sir Chris Hoy and Prostate Cancer UK called it disappointing, while Cancer Research UK supported it and Wes Streeting wants screening 'provided this is backed by evidence'.
- Roughly 1.3 million men fall into one of the risk groups, but only about 21,000 with BRCA mutations would be invited, while Lithuania runs population PSA screening for men aged 50-69.
