Pickleball gets its own Washington license plate
The $157.25 plate supports a nonprofit to fund building and maintaining public pickleball courts, celebrating Washington's state sport created in the 1960s.
- On Nov. 19, Washington launched a pickleball specialty license plate costing $157.25, with part of the fee supporting a sponsoring nonprofit, after covering production costs.
- In 2023, the Seattle Metro Pickleball Association began pursuing the plate, gathering 3,500 petition signatures but falling short until lawmakers added it to an omnibus bill named 'Bill's Bill' for Sen. Bill Ramos, Issaquah.
- In the days leading up to the Nov. 19 launch, the association conducted an auction for the first plates, with proceeds funding public pickleball courts, Kate Van Gent said.
- The plate is the second of seven being phased in and one of 13 specialty plates authorized by the Washington State Legislature, joining nearly 70 existing specialty plates in Washington.
- The state Department of Transportation tests specialty plates for camera readability; the Mount St. Helens plate failed and awaits redesign while the timeline for the other six specialty plates depends on signature submissions.
