Person with what appears to be a gun arrested outside US Capitol: Police
The 18-year-old suspect was carrying a loaded shotgun with extra rounds and wore tactical gear when arrested near the Capitol, with motive under investigation, police said.
- On Tuesday, U.S. Capitol Police arrested a person with an apparent gun near the West Front of the U.S. Capitol Building around 12:30 p.m. and urged the public to avoid the area while collecting evidence.
- Officers said they encountered the person after spotting the individual park a white Mercedes SUV, exit with a loaded shotgun, and run toward the West Front wearing tactical gear, U.S. Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan said.
- Sullivan described the arrest, saying `This individual was challenged by United States Capitol Police officers in order to drop the weapon, which he did comply with`; one person is in custody and no other suspects appear involved.
- Because Congress is in recess until Feb. 23, several streets near the Capitol were temporarily closed while police activity remained in the area.
- Looking ahead, investigators say the U.S. Capitol Police note that firearms are prohibited on Capitol Grounds, even if legally registered, and commend officers involved in the arrest.
