OC WASTE & RECYCLING AND ORANGE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION LAUNCH PROJECT ZERO WASTE CURRICULUM FOR K-12 EDUCATION
The countywide program offers digital lessons in English, Spanish and Vietnamese, with free field trips that are already fully booked for 2026.
On Thursday, the Orange County Department of Education and OC Waste & Recycling launched "Project Zero Waste," a free, standards-aligned K-12 curriculum designed to advance environmental learning across the county.
Aligning with California Science and Social Science frameworks, the program provides age-appropriate lessons ranging from foundational waste sorting for younger students to climate science and food recovery systems for older grades.
Orange County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Stefan Bean said the program helps students "develop knowledge and habits that benefit their schools and communities." OC Waste & Recycling Director Tom Koutroulis added it provides "practical tools to engage students in meaningful conversations about sustainability."
Educators can access digital materials at their own pace throughout the school year, though field trip opportunities including bus and substitute teacher stipends are fully booked for 2026.
Expanding on the existing EcoChallenge program, the initiative adds hands-on learning opportunities, and educators interested in participating in 2027 can register to learn when future field trip slots become available.
