Federal Government Continues Investment in Fusion Sector to Establish Centre for Fusion Energy
The new Centre for Fusion Energy, backed by $91 million from government and industry, aims to build domestic fusion capabilities and prepare a skilled workforce.
- On Nov. 28, 2025, the Government of Canada and Government of Ontario announced the Centre for Fusion Energy, partnering with AECL, CNL, OPG, and Stellarex to advance fusion research.
- Ontario is leveraging its nuclear position by using its near-total tritium supply from OPG's CANDU reactors and over 50 years of CANDU technology, Stephen Lecce said.
- In monetary and in-kind support, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories are contributing $33 million in research over three years, Ontario Power Generation invests $19.5 million, and Stellarex plans up to $39 million.
- The partnership aims to create a national platform to develop fusion capabilities, support fusion fuel-cycle demonstration at Chalk River Laboratories, and prepare a fusion-ready workforce.
- Technical strengths include scientific founders with over 120 years’ experience and Ontario Power Generation’s stellarator approach using strong electromagnets, while Fred Dermarkar said Canada is positioned to play an important fusion role.
