Bank of England warns of scams after fake video shows brawl with Reform UK's Farage
The posts link to fake investment pages, and users reported seeing the adverts a million times, the Bank of England said.
On Tuesday, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage and Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey condemned deepfake videos circulating on Elon Musk's X platform, which falsely depict them brawling on the BBC show 'Question Time'.
These fake advertisements link to fabricated BBC News articles promoting investment schemes falsely claiming to turn £250 into £1 million within 11 weeks.
Investigators from charity Full Fact uncovered around 100 similar posts generating more than 380,000 total reactions, suggesting many are falling for false narratives "churned out at an industrial scale."
Cybersecurity experts at Bitdefender identified the campaign as a "global, co-ordinated investment scam ecosystem" linked to Russian-language criminal scammers, while the Bank of England reported the videos to X.
Experts warn these posts represent a trend to "weaponise empathy" and drive engagement, while Tech Secretary Liz Kendall expressed concern about digital replicas undermining public trust in what citizens see online.
