3D heart scans have saved NHS millions since 2021 rollout, data shows

Since 2021, the NHS has used AI-driven 3D heart scans at 56 English hospitals to diagnose over 24,300 patients with suspected heart disease.
NHS England accelerated patient access to effective and cost-efficient medical innovations by implementing the MedTech Funding Mandate programme.
These scans convert CT heart images into personalized 3D models analyzed by AI, reducing invasive angiogram tests by 7%, and by 16% in patients needing no further treatment.
NHS data estimates £9.5 million saved since rollout, about £390 per patient, with Dr Vin Diwakar calling the scans transformative in reducing tests and speeding diagnoses.
The scans enable faster, more accurate diagnoses, freeing NHS capacity and allowing clinicians to advise effective treatments, potentially saving lives like patient Sarah Remnant’s.
