NHAI, Jio Launch Telecom Safety Alert System to Boost Secure Travel on Highways

The telecom alert system will notify users of accident-prone zones and hazards via SMS, WhatsApp, and calls, initially available to Reliance Jio customers with expansion planned.

  • On December 02, 2025, the National Highways Authority of India signed an MoU with Reliance Jio for a telecom-based safety alert system that will launch within two months.
  • The National Highways Authority of India will integrate the system in phases with the Rajmargyatra mobile application and emergency helpline 1033 to enhance road safety.
  • The system will send warnings via SMS, WhatsApp and high-priority calls, alerting Jio mobile users about accident-prone stretches, stray-cattle zones, fog-affected areas and emergency diversions.
  • Initially the service will be available to Jio customers, with an initial pilot programme on a select few highways before other telecom service providers are onboarded.
  • Combining real-time alerts with national platforms will enhance commuter awareness and reduce road incidents through phased integration with NHAI digital platforms and other telecom service providers.
