New Zealand unveils defence boost for fleet and drones
The package funds drones, ship maintenance and training as New Zealand moves to replace ageing naval vessels and lift combat capability.
On Saturday, Defence Minister Chris Penk announced a $1.58 billion investment in maritime security in Auckland, with funding directed toward drone systems and naval fleet renewal.
Conflict in the Middle East continues to disrupt international shipping routes, prompting the government to secure maritime interests. Penk described the oceans as a "vital national interest that must be actively secured."
The funding allocates $880 million for operations and $700 million in capital to implement Defence Capability Plan projects. An additional $215 million supports critical maintenance on frigates HMNZS Te Kaha, HMNZS Te Mana, and HMNZS Canterbury.
More than 80% of the New Zealand Defence Force's $2.6 billion operating and personnel budget is spent domestically, bolstering the local economy while maintaining a strong Defence Force.
Total new investment in defence has reached $5.8 billion since the Defence Capability Plan was released just over a year ago. Finance Minister Nicola Willis will deliver the full Budget on Thursday, May 28.
