Nearly Blind Refugee Found Dead in Buffalo After Border Patrol Left Him
Nurul Amin Shah Alam, a 56-year-old nearly blind refugee, was found dead days after Border Patrol dropped him miles from home without notifying family, authorities said.
- City Hall spokesperson Ian Ott said Shah Alam, 56, was found dead on the first block of Perry Street shortly after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and identified by the Erie County Medical Examiner.
- Per the Erie County Sheriff's Office, Shah Alam was released from the Erie County Holding Center on February 19, 2025, and U.S. Border Patrol took custody and dropped him at a Tim Hortons shortly after 8 p.m. on February 19, 2026.
- According to his attorney Benjamin Macaluso, Shah Alam, who is completely blind in one eye, faced assault, trespassing, and weapon charges after a Riverside incident last year and took a plea earlier this month.
- Erie County District Attorney Mike Keane said his office was unaware of the release until yesterday and will move to dismiss charges upon receiving the death certificate.
- A missing-persons case was opened Sunday, then briefly closed when Buffalo Police Department mistakenly believed Shah Alam was in ICE detention, and neither his family nor attorney Macaluso were notified.
