Starting Saturday, NBA Referees to Get New Tech Upgrade: Here's What It Means

  • Starting Saturday, NBA referees will begin using headsets during regular-season games for the first time, the league announced on Friday.
  • The NBA tested the system since 2022 at the G League Winter Showcase, NBA Summer League and preseason games, while similar technology has been used in other leagues around the world.
  • Under phase one, referees will clip an earpiece to their uniform and use it only during instant replay reviews and other stoppages, not during live play, while phase two would, after evaluation, allow full-game earpiece use.
  • The league announced, with the National Basketball Referees Association, a two-phase process to improve game flow and officiating accuracy via real-time NBA replay center communication starting Saturday.
  • Phase one runs into January and a second phase would begin then, running at least through the All-Star break in February, the league announced.
