‘National rescue mission’ to save butterflies

UNITED KINGDOM, JUL 18 – Last year’s count recorded a 50% drop in butterfly sightings with 85,000 participants, prompting urgent conservation efforts to track and protect declining UK species.

  • On July 18, Butterfly Conservation launched the 2025 Big Butterfly Count, encouraging people across the UK to dedicate a quarter of an hour outside observing and recording butterflies and moths.
  • The count follows data from the previous year, which showed the smallest number of butterflies ever recorded and prompted the charity to announce a state of emergency for British butterflies.
  • Participants will record their observations of 51 butterfly species through a dedicated app and website, contributing valuable data on declining populations such as the small tortoiseshell and common blue, which are impacted by factors like habitat degradation and climate change.
  • Dr Richard Fox highlighted that this event offers an opportunity to transform interest into meaningful efforts that support the preservation of butterflies across the UK for many years ahead.
  • The count’s results will improve scientists’ understanding of butterfly populations and support conservation efforts addressing long-term environmental pressures.
