Somber Mood Surrounds Coca-Cola 600 as Drivers Prepare to Race Three Days After Kyle Busch’s Death
The speedway plans to honor Busch's legacy with a tribute during the weekend, while the racing community continues to process his unexpected death.
On Friday, NASCAR Chief Executive Officer Steve O'Donnell confirmed the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway will proceed as scheduled Sunday, May 24, following the sudden death of driver Kyle Busch.
Busch died Thursday at age 41 after being hospitalized Wednesday with an undisclosed "severe illness" at a General Motors facility in North Carolina, where he reported "coughing up some blood."
Tributes are planned throughout the weekend as NASCAR drivers and the wider sports community mourn the icon; the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes held a moment of silence Thursday.
Following "minimal conversations" with the family and Richard Childress Racing, O'Donnell stated, "Kyle Busch would probably be pretty pissed off if we didn't race."
This decision echoes NASCAR's choice 25 years ago to race the week after Dale Earnhardt's death at the 2001 Daytona 500; officials are working through ways to honor Busch throughout the season.
