Success! NASA's first planetary defense test hits asteroid.

NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) made contact with the asteroid Didymos on Monday evening. The spacecraft journeyed for a little over 10 months to test if it would be possible to save Earth from future hazardous asteroids or comets by booting them off course. DART is about 11 billion pounds smaller than its target, the craft aimed to alter the asteroid's course.
