NASA targets April 1 to launch astronauts around the moon
Artemis II will carry four astronauts on a 10-day lunar orbit mission to test life-support and spacecraft systems, advancing NASA’s plan for frequent moon missions, officials said.
- Following an FRR at Kennedy Space Center, NASA is targeting April 1 as its first launch opportunity for Artemis II, officials said during a March 12 briefing.
- Engineers found a helium-flow blockage and earlier cryogenic liquid hydrogen leaks that forced rollbacks and removed February and March launch windows.
- The Artemis II crew includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen on a 10-day mission about 4,700 miles beyond the far side of the moon.
- With a targeted April 1 window, NASA has listed backup launch dates April 2–6 and April 30, and plans to roll back the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft next week with a two-week quarantine by mid next week.
- As part of the Artemis campaign, the flight will validate crewed SLS and Orion systems while a NASA Office of the Inspector General report warns of commercial lunar landers delays and unresolved crew survival analyses.
