More Rain Falls in Taiwan After Tropical Depression Causes Flooding
Flooding from Tropical Storm Fung-Wong and a monsoon caused the creek to overflow, submerging infrastructure and forcing evacuation of over 8,500 residents, officials said.
- On Nov. 12, Mingli Village in Wanrong Township saw flooding persist for two days after Matai'an Creek overflowed due to heavy rain from Tropical Storm Fung-Wong and a northeasterly monsoon, causing the heaviest local impact in eastern Hualien County.
- FANCA reported the Matai'an barrier-lake overflow channel eroded by Fung-Wong, lowering water level 9.3 meters and cutting volume about 960,000 cubic meters, while residents noted missing wave-dissipating blocks removed for dredging.
- Authorities evacuated more than 8,500 people from coastal and mountainous areas, and 95 people were injured islandwide as Fung-Wong brought sustained winds of 54 kph and closed a highway portion.
- Hualien County Magistrate Hsu Chen-wei and Teng Tzu-yu inspected Wednesday and confirmed floodwater entered at the 231-kilometer mark of Highway 9, coordinating with central government authorities while Water Resources Agency director-general Lin Yuan-peng said concrete blocks and sandbags were deployed but flooding continued.
- Heavy rain is expected through Thursday near Keelung and Taipei, with Yilan recording more than 42 centimeters since Monday, and officials warn of flooding and landslide risks in mountainous areas.
