MLS Owners Vote to Shift to Summer-to-Spring Schedule Starting in 2027
- On Thursday, MLS owners voted in Florida to move Major League Soccer to a summer-to-spring calendar starting in the coming years, with the regular season running from mid-July through April and MLS Cup Playoffs in May.
- After a multi-year review, owners moved to align MLS with global leagues, syncing transfer windows and FIFA dates to enhance clubs' competitiveness, involving owners, club executives, players, the MLSPA, partners and fans.
- For the transition MLS will run a shortened February-to-May season, and MLS says 92% of viewers support the shift while this year spending reached $336 million, breaking transfer records thrice.
- MLS and the MLS Players Association are still negotiating calendar details with talks teetering, while officials warn a compressed offseason could hinder free agency and winter play may force alternate venues for Toronto FC and CF Montréal at Stade Saputo.
- League officials argue the new calendar can boost playoff viewership by avoiding NFL and college football, while some warn southern teams gain advantage and northern clubs face pitch heating costs.
