Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback EV Recycles Classic Name on Rebadged Nissan Leaf
The electric crossover uses the same underpinnings as the third-generation Nissan LEAF, and Mitsubishi says prices and specs will come closer to launch.
On Tuesday, Mitsubishi unveiled the 2027 Eclipse Sportback EV, an electric crossover SUV set to launch in the United States during the second half of 2026.
Through its alliance with Nissan, Mitsubishi developed the new crossover on the Nissan Leaf platform, marking the brand's return to the American electric vehicle market after a long hiatus.
Although Mitsubishi has not confirmed final specifications, the model is expected to feature a 75 kWh battery and 174-horsepower motor, alongside distinct design elements including three-spoke wheels and restyled lighting graphics.
The Nissan Leaf currently starts at around $30,000, and while pricing for the Eclipse Sportback remains undisclosed, the automaker expects the crossover to compete in the low-cost electric vehicle segment.
This marks the second time Mitsubishi has revived the Eclipse nameplate, which debuted in 1990, reflecting a broader trend among automakers leveraging partnerships to navigate the shifting electric vehicle market.
