Facebook is shutting down the external 'Like' button

  • On February 10, 2026, Meta will discontinue Facebook's external Like and Share buttons for third-party websites, correcting the release date in an update on November 10, 2025.
  • Introduced in 2010, the plugins were part of Facebook's Open Graph to overlay social features on sites, but Meta says they now "reflect an earlier era of web development" as usage declined.
  • Technically, the plugins will gracefully degrade by rendering as a 0x0 pixel invisible element, and Meta says site admins and developers do not have to act but may remove them early.
  • Ending support marks the end of an era for Meta and Facebook, changing how publishers and websites used the Like and Share buttons to generate site traffic.
  • Notably, some plugins remain as Social Plugins with a Facebook 'F' share module persist, while critics point to the Cambridge Analytica scandal and past data concerns tied to these plugins.
