Moves to Ban ‘Exploitative’ Unpaid Internships a Step Closer
UUSIMAA, FINLAND, JUL 16 – Eleven complaints allege possible favouritism after Oliver Stubb, son of Finland's president, was selected for an internship despite funding rule inconsistencies at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs.
- Internal correspondence obtained by Yle shows Oliver Stubb was told he could submit without funding, while another applicant was warned their submission would be disqualified without it.
- Normally, the Finnish Institute of International Affairs requires external funding for interns, but FIIA’s head of HR encouraged Stubb to apply, and FIIA said it followed direct contact from Stubb.
- Amid the controversy, eleven complaints were submitted to authorities, highlighting application disparity, and two to the Chancellor of Justice underscore formal challenges.
- Following the internal review, the board said procedures around internships must be clear and consistent, and its board said this procedural change is necessary.
- Amid ongoing scrutiny, authorities reported the Parliamentary Ombudsman told AFP they received 10 complaints, and the Chancellor of Justice reported two as the inquiry continues.
