Massive cyberattack on Polish power system in December failed, minister says
The cyberattack targeted renewable energy communication networks and was linked to Russian sabotage, with renewables providing around 29% of Poland's electricity, officials said.
- On January 13, 2026, Miłosz Motyka, Poland's energy minister, reported Poland's power system faced its largest cyberattack in years in the last week of December.
- Polish ministers attribute the incident to Russian sabotage aimed at destabilising Poland, noting Russia's military intelligence trebled resources for such actions last year amid rising attacks since February 2022.
- Unlike past strikes on big plants, this attempt targeted communications to disrupt links between renewable generating installations and power distribution operators, involving multiple small-scale generating sources.
- The government warned that the attack came very close to causing a blackout on Monday amid extremely cold, snowy weather when renewables provided 25% of Poland's electricity, and Polish security services said they rose to the occasion.
- With renewables at around 29% of generation, Polish officials warn that the 170,000 cyber incidents in early 2025 increase the risk of recurring attacks on smaller facilities.
