Louisiana Man Fleeing DWI Stop Jumps Into Swamp, Gets Attacked by Alligator, Police Say
Victor M. Rivas was injured after fleeing a traffic stop, and troopers later charged him with second-offense DWI and resisting an officer.
On Sunday, 40-year-old Victor Rivas of Montz was attacked by an alligator while fleeing Louisiana State Troopers during a DWI stop in St. Charles Parish, sustaining injuries to both arms.
Earlier Sunday, Rivas allegedly drove recklessly on I-10 in Jefferson Parish, striking a concrete barrier and blowing out a tire before troopers stopped his Toyota Supra on I-310.
After showing signs of impairment during the traffic stop, Rivas fled on foot, jumping from the elevated I-310 into the swamp below, where troopers later found him walking along Hwy 61.
Authorities eventually apprehended Rivas using a drone after he jumped back into the swamp to evade officers, resulting in the alligator attack; he was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Charged with DWI and resisting an officer, Rivas also faces outstanding warrants for hit-and-run driving and was being held Monday at the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center on a $17,500 bond.
