Maharashtra govt to rename Islampur in Sangli district to ‘Ishwarpur’
ISLAMPUR TOWN, SANGLI DISTRICT, MAHARASHTRA, JUL 18 – The renaming follows a memorandum by Shiv Pratisthan and has been pending since 1986 as part of Maharashtra's ongoing renaming drive, officials said.
- On Friday, the Maharashtra government officially announced the renaming of Islampur to Ishwarpur at the end of the monsoon session.
- After a memorandum, Shiv Pratisthan had demanded the change, with the demand pending since 1986, said Shiv Sena leader from Islampur.
- Following the cabinet meeting on Thursday, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal confirmed the decision will be sent to the Centre for approval.
- According to Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, 'The Central Government has the right to change the name of the village and city,' and the name will change once it receives approval.
- In 2022, the state government approved renaming Aurangabad to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad to Dharashiv, as part of Maharashtra's ongoing renaming drive, with petitions dismissed last year.
