Lithuania charges 15 with terrorism over ‘Russia bomb plot’
- On July 19, 2024, four parcels containing explosive devices were sent from Vilnius via DHL and DPD to multiple European destinations, resulting in three detonations in Germany, Poland, and the UK.
- Lithuanian prosecutors uncovered the plot as part of a Russian-organized network involving fifteen suspects, some linked to a foiled May 9 arson at a Vilnius IKEA store and coordinated via Telegram with cryptocurrency payments.
- The explosive devices were homemade incendiary charges concealed in everyday items with electronic timers, and investigators found over six kilograms of explosives and detonators during searches in several countries.
- Authorities indicated that the parcels were intended to trigger intense fires and potentially devastating damage, with a Eurojust-coordinated joint investigation involving law enforcement agencies from at least ten countries underway to probe the incidents.
- The investigation led to charges against suspects from Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Ukraine, and highlighted concerns over Russian military intelligence links, while Moscow denied involvement and dismissed accusations as Russophobia.
