'Romy and Michele' Sequel in Production
The sequel reunites Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino with original and new cast members, and it will stream exclusively on Hulu and Disney+ internationally.
Production for the 20th Century Studios sequel to the 1997 comedy Romy and Michele's High School Reunion officially began Friday in Los Angeles, with filmmaker Tim Federle directing the project for Hulu.
The original 1997 film earned $29 million following Romy and Michele's plan to invent fake careers and impress former classmates; fans have spent nearly 30 years requesting a sequel continuation.
Academy Award-winner Mira Sorvino and Emmy winner Lisa Kudrow are reprising their roles alongside returning cast members Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, Camryn Manheim, and Julia Campbell, with newcomers including Keegan-Michael Key and Rob Huebel.
Screenwriter Robin Schiff, who created the original characters, returns to pen the sequel alongside executive producers Barry Kemp, Sorvino, and Kudrow, while costume designer Mona May rejoins to style the production.
Plot details remain under wraps as the studio expands its franchise strategy, marking the iconic duo's return to streaming on Hulu and positioning the project within a broader revival of late-1990s comedies.
