'Significant' Step in Establishing National Restorative Justice Programme for Post Office Victims

The programme includes victims, families, and children, aiming for truth and accountability beyond financial payouts, with 145 participants so far, expanding to 200 more by March.

  • On Thursday, the Restorative Justice Council announced a national restorative justice programme for victims of the Post Office's Horizon IT scandal, expanding to include children and families of affected postmasters in the United Kingdom.
  • Faulty Fujitsu-made Horizon computer program data led to wrongful prosecution of more than 700 postmasters, prompting Sir Wyn Williams, chair of the public inquiry, to recommend formal restorative justice plans.
  • Online listening sessions will be offered for children and others unable to attend in person, while group-based confidential safe spaces and freelance restorative listeners support facilitated restorative dialogue.
  • So far, 145 individuals have taken part and an extra 200 postmasters are expected between November and March, and RJC chief executive Jim Simon said `Engagement is good and continues to grow`.
  • With further inquiry reports due in the coming months, the updated restorative justice report will appear in January; Fujitsu says it is `morally obligated` to contribute, but the public inquiry will decide the scale while the RJC stresses restoration needs more than money.
