Lithuanian journalists plan protest over proposed changes to LRT law
The Lithuanian Association of Professional Journalists said Friday it plans to stage a protest outside parliament next month over proposed changes to public broadcaster LRT’s governing law that critics say could weaken its independence.
The Association of Professional Journalists announced on Friday a protest planned for December outside the Seimas to express opposition to changes to LRT-related laws that some media representatives see as reducing the broadcaster's independence. At the same time, President Gitanas Nausėda says the government must ensure journalists' freedom of speech and objectivity.
As the Seimas is paving the way for MPs' proposals to freeze the LRT funding model and simplify the procedure for dismissing the director, the Association of Professional Journalists, which opposes this, plans to hold a protest near the Seimas on December 9.
