Journalist’s house demolished in Jammu; PDP, CPI(M) condemn move
Jammu Development Authority demolished one 40-year-old house amid widespread encroachments, sparking claims of selective enforcement and calls for accountability from political leaders and lawyers.
- On Thursday a Jammu Development Authority and police team demolished the home of local journalist Arfaz Ahmad Daing in Narwal/Transport Nagar, Jammu.
- The Jammu Development Authority said the operation formed part of a larger anti-encroachment campaign as around 20 lakh kanals are encroached and the J&K High Court directed drives against major encroachers.
- Daing said he received no demolition notice and was denied extra time by the JDA team; the demolition of his over 40-year-old home left his elderly parents, wife, and three children homeless.
- Senior lawyers Sheikh Shakeel and Zulkarnain Choudhary condemned the JDA's move as selective, while Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah alleged a 'planned conspiracy' by Raj Bhawan appointees and demanded public encroachment lists and elected government approval for key postings.
- Soon after the razing, Hindu resident of Jammu Kuldip Sharma gifted five marlas of land to Arfaz Ahmad Daing and registered it, amid wider concern from the Press Club of India and Committee to Protect Journalists over recent State Investigation Agency raids on Kashmir Times.
