Iran’s soccer federation says team’s World Cup base camp has been moved to Mexico from the US
The federation said the switch eases visa concerns and cuts travel time to Los Angeles by 55 minutes, according to Mehdi Taj.
On Saturday, Iran Football Federation President Mehdi Taj announced the team moved its World Cup base camp to Tijuana, Mexico, from the United States after securing FIFA approval to address visa and security complications.
The team previously planned to train in Arizona, but uncertainty surrounding security and visa delays necessitated the change, with officials citing complications from the US-Israel war on Iran.
Tijuana offers better logistical access, located just 55 minutes by flight from Los Angeles, Taj noted; the squad will travel directly to Mexico on Iran Air to streamline the process.
Players and staff are completing visa procedures in Ankara, Turkey, while the team prepares for a friendly against Gambia on May 29 before naming the 26-man World Cup squad.
Iran plays New Zealand in Inglewood, California, on June 15, followed by matches against Belgium and Egypt, as the World Cup runs June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The selection of Iran, which initially planned to establish its base camp in Tucson (United States) during the 2026 World Cup, will eventually be established in Mexico with the endorsement of FIFA, which could in principle solve the problems of entry visas to U.S. territory.
