'Mischievous hands': Indonesians blame deforestation for devastating floods
Indonesia lost over 240,000 hectares of primary forest in 2024, increasing flood and landslide risks during the monsoon and a rare tropical storm, officials said.
- 1- Indonesian resident Reliwati Siregar expressed anger over rampant deforestation around her home in Sumatra. 2- Landslides and floods triggered by a tropical storm killed more than 700 people, the deadliest disaster since the 2004 tsunami. 3- Siregar, staying in a temporary shelter in hard-hit Tapanuli, blamed illegal tree-cutting for worsening the tragedy.
