Iran designated as a state sponsor of wrongful detention, Rubio says
The U.S. will impose sanctions, export controls, and travel restrictions on Iran to deter wrongful detention of Americans, including at least two imprisoned citizens, officials said.
- On Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio designated Iran as a state sponsor of wrongful detention, invoking the Executive Order to Protect U.S. Nationals from Wrongful Detention and the Countering Wrongful Detention Act of 2025.
- Rubio wrote that, 47 years ago, Ayatollah Khomeini endorsed hostage-taking, and Iran has a long pattern of detaining foreigners for leverage.
- Rubio warned the U.S. may consider additional measures, including a potential geographic travel restriction on the use of U.S. passports, and urged Americans in Iran to leave immediately.
- Rubio added that `We encourage it to do so,` while President Donald Trump said he was disappointed with negotiations and warned `sometimes you have to use force`.
- Positioning this legally, Rubio said, `the move could change diplomatic leverage and travel` as tensions mount and Iran's nuclear talks occurred on Thursday.
