Injured US defender Chris Richards goes through full practice in boost for World Cup availability
Chris Richards got through his first full workout with the United States, easing concerns after an ankle injury and boosting his World Cup roster chances.
On Monday, U.S. defender Chris Richards participated in his first full practice at Great Park in Irvine, California, ahead of the Americans' FIFA World Cup opener against Paraguay on Friday.
Richards tore two left ankle ligaments playing for Crystal Palace on May 17, forcing him to miss the Americans' two recent friendlies against Senegal and Germany.
More than 5,500 fans watched the 45-minute session with Richards running and cutting without discomfort. "Today, it's Richards' first time with the team," U.S. manager Mauricio Pochettino told reporters.
U.S. captain Tim Ream emphasized the team must improve defensive communication and reduce goals conceded, while midfielder Tyler Adams was limited to gym work due to "load management."
The Americans play their opening match at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on Friday. Known as Los Angeles Stadium for the tournament, the venue holds about 70,000 spectators.
