Hundreds of laid-off CDC employees are being reinstated
- On Wednesday, officials overseeing the CDC announced that more than 460 employees who had been laid off earlier this year are now being brought back to their positions.
- These reinstatements follow mass layoffs in April that cut about 2,400 CDC jobs under a reorganization aimed at shrinking government spending.
- The reinstated workers include roughly 200 employees from HIV, Hepatitis, STD and Tuberculosis programs and 150 from Environmental Health, including lead poisoning labs.
- The head of HHS acknowledged that at least one-fifth of the department’s staff reductions were errors and mentioned that bringing back some of the laid-off employees was always intended.
- Despite the rehiring, many vital public health positions remain vacant, and former employees warn that program cuts could increase disease and death.
