Hundreds of laid-off CDC employees are being reinstated
ATLANTA, GEORGIA, JUN 11 – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reversed part of April's workforce cuts by reinstating over 460 CDC employees, representing nearly 20% of those laid off, officials said.
- More than 460 staff members who were laid off earlier this year at the federal public health agency headquartered in Atlanta have been notified of their reinstatement as of Wednesday.
- These reinstatements follow mass cuts announced in April that eliminated about 2,400 CDC jobs and were part of a broader federal workforce reduction led by the Trump administration.
- The group of reinstated employees includes about 200 individuals formerly working in the CDC division focused on HIV, hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases, and tuberculosis, as well as approximately 150 workers from the CDC’s environmental health branch, which encompasses the laboratory addressing lead poisoning.
- Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. acknowledged that 20% of the department's cuts were mistakes and said it was always planned to reinstate some employees to maintain critical public health functions.
- Despite the reinstatements, key public health positions remain vacant, and former employees warn many CDC programs closed by the cuts could lead to increased disease and death.
