Honduran election still too close to call as vote counting enters seventh day

Repeated technical failures and allegations of deliberate fraud have delayed final results in a razor-thin Honduran presidential race with over 87% of votes counted.

  • On Dec 5, vote counting stretched into its sixth day with no winner declared as the Transmission and Dissemination of Election Results system suffered repeated downtime and a Tuesday pause.
  • CNE member Marlon Ochoa alleged coordinated electoral fraud by fellow council members, citing disabled biometric checks, altered tally sheets, unexplained vote transfers, and a 40-hour retention of more than 16,000 tally sheets causing nearly one million vote discrepancies.
  • With 87.84% of ballots tallied, Nasry Asfura held about 40.20%, roughly 20,000 votes ahead of Salvador Nasralla at 39.48%, while officials said 14% of ballots showed inconsistencies and would be reviewed.
  • CESPAD urged the CNE to act after repeated outages, while National Electoral Council head Ana Paola Hall said the process will meet the December 30 deadline amid warnings of unrest.
  • Following Trump's endorsement and a high-profile pardon, critics and COPINH condemned U.S. interference, warning it threatens sovereignty and renews elite control in the 2025 contest.
