The Union of the Romanian Principalities was celebrated today also in Chisinau. Representatives of several unionist parties and civic activists laid flowers at the bust of Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza, from the Botanica sector, as part of a series of events dedicated to the 166th anniversary of the Union of the Principalities on January 24, 1859.

Some events organized on the Day of the Union of the Principalities were an opportunity for some of those present to express their dissatisfaction with politicians.

The day when, in 1859, Moldavian Colonel Alexandru Ioan Cuza was elected ruler of Wallachia, becoming the first leader of the United Principalities and, a few years later, of the unitary state of Romania, is marked on January 24.

The map of the counties that belonged to the two Principalities of Romania 166 years ago still shows a slow pace of development, if one excludes Bucharest, which distorts the data. The cumulative turnover of Muntenia and Oltenia, in 1859 Wallachia, is 406 billion lei, almost double the current counties that made up Moldova in 1859. Moldova in 1859, however, today comprises only 8 counties, while Wallachia in 1859 today comprises 14 counties.
