Government notifies changes in Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025
Foreigners who want to stay longer must register before 180 days, and extended permission will be granted only in emergent circumstances, the ministry said.
- On Monday, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs notified amendments to the Immigration and Foreigners Rules, requiring foreigners on visas of up to 180 days to register before their visa expires if seeking to extend their stay.
- Earlier rules allowed registration within 14 days after completing 180 days of stay in India, but the updated policy mandates registration "any time before the expiry of the said period of 180 days."
- The revised provision also applies to foreigners holding visas valid for more than 180 days where conditions specify each stay cannot exceed 180 days, and officials clarified extended registration will be granted "only in emergent circumstances."
- Beyond visa timelines, the notification updates reporting obligations and administrative procedures for hospitals, nursing homes, and other medical institutions providing medical care alongside lodging or sleeping facilities on their premises.
- These amendments follow draft changes notified last month regarding Citizenship Rules, which require certain applicants to declare possession or surrender passports issued by Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.
