Google Chrome to revoke notification access for inactive sites

Google Chrome will revoke notification permissions from inactive sites to cut alert overload, as fewer than 1% of notifications currently drive user engagement, a product manager said.

  • On Friday, Google announced it will automatically revoke notification permissions for inactive websites on Android and desktop versions of the Google Chrome browser.
  • Fewer than 1% of notifications generate engagement, Google says, prompting an update that expands Safety Check auto-revocation and builds on the September 2024 one-time permissions change.
  • Chrome will notify you when it unsubscribes a site, and Chrome users can restore permissions via Safety Check or by revisiting the site; users can also disable auto-revocation, which excludes installed web apps.
  • In testing, the change cut overload while leaving total clicks largely unchanged, as Google's internal tests found fewer notifications reduced overload with minimal impact on notification clicks.
  • Early this year, Google said Chrome’s change aligns with ongoing privacy and safety efforts, and Agarwal added, `We believe this change will lead to a cleaner, more focused browsing experience, and we’ll continue to invest in ways to help you manage your online interactions and reduce distractions, so you can make the most of your time online.
