German Authorities Investigate Arson in Major Blackout
Grid operator Netze BW said evidence of three fires points to deliberate sabotage, and millions of euros in damage have been reported.
- Early on Monday, a major power outage struck Reutlingen, leaving approximately 20,000 homes without electricity and affecting critical facilities including hospitals and retirement homes.
- Grid operator Netze reported that an arson attack likely caused the outage at the Reutlingen-West substation, where evidence of three fires and a damaged fence were discovered.
- Five and a half hours after the outage began, power was restored to half of the approximately 20,000 affected customers; as of noon on Monday, around 7,600 households remained without electricity.
- The State Criminal Police Office, or LKA, is investigating the incident with fire experts involved, while officials stated a reliable forecast for complete restoration is not yet possible.
- This incident follows similar infrastructure attacks in Germany, including a January 3rd attack on Berlin power cables and a September 9th, 2025, assault on electricity pylons affecting 50,000 households.
