Georgia Teacher Killed During School Prank; 5 Students Charged
Five teens, including the driver facing first-degree vehicular homicide, were charged after a prank led to the death of a beloved teacher at his home, officials said.
- On March 5, deputies responded to the 4400 block of North Gate Drive after reports that Jason Hughes, a 40-year-old North Hall High School math teacher and coach, had been run over and later died at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
- During a junior-senior 'rolling' prank, a group of five 18-year-old Gainesville residents toilet-papered trees outside Hughes's home and then got into two vehicles to leave.
- The Hall County Sheriff's Office says the suspects include four other 18-year-olds arrested and charged with criminal trespass and littering.
- More than $155,000 has been raised by an online fundraiser for Hughes' family, and Laura Hughes and her family support dropping charges for those involved.
- The Hall County Sheriff's Office says the investigation is ongoing, and NG3 noted Hughes had served as its North Hall director for years, mentoring students and leading Bible studies.
