Garda watchdog investigating death of man in custody
The family says an independent pathologist found concerns with the Irish postmortem, while toxicology results and CCTV remain outstanding, officials said.
On Saturday, Lee McDonnell died in a Dublin Garda station after becoming unresponsive in his cell, an event now under investigation by Fiosr, the police watchdog.
Investigators identified McDonnell as the chief suspect in the stabbing of Thomas Griffin at the War Memorial Gardens on May 30, before the victim died attempting to swim across the River Liffey.
Gardaí also investigated McDonnell for the 2022 gangland murder of Gary Carey at the Hilton Hotel in Kilmainham, with a file recommending charges submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions .
Fiosr, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, confirmed it received a referral under the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024, with investigators attending the scene and declining further comment.
Known for a volatile history, McDonnell had accumulated 133 previous convictions, including a 2015 prison escape that led to a five-week manhunt before his recapture in Clondalkin.
