FRENCH OPEN ’26: A final dance at Roland Garros for retiring Stan Wawrinka and Gael Monfils
On Thursday, Gael Monfils hosted 'Gael & Friends,' a star-studded exhibition at Roland Garros, teaming with wife Elina Svitolina to celebrate his two-decade career before his final Grand Slam appearance.
The 39-year-old Frenchman announced his retirement at season's end, leaving a legacy of 13 ATP titles and a 40-17 record at Roland Garros. 'I won a career I'm proud of,' Monfils said after the match.
Leading players including Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, and Stefanos Tsitsipas attended the celebration. Naomi Osaka, Maria Sakkari, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and Richard Gasquet also joined, adding nostalgic weight to the evening.
Monfils will face 25-year-old compatriot Hugo Gaston in the first round next week, marking his 19th appearance in the French Open main draw. The tournament begins Sunday, May 24, 2026.
Stan Wawrinka, also retiring at season's end, prepares for his 21st Roland Garros appearance. The 41-year-old three-time Grand Slam champion faces 17th seed Arthur Fils in the first round.
