On the occasion of the commemoration of Armistice Day in World War I, Serbian Minister without Portfolio in Charge of Diaspora Đorđe Milicevic attended a commemoration today at the Serbian Military Cemetery in Thieu, France, his office announced.
This Tuesday marks the 107th anniversary of the Armistice, which ended the First World War. In Chattancourt (Meuse), a trench was dug in the garden of an individual, in the middle of the houses, for ten years. Regularly, reconstitutions are offered to the public not to forget the hell experienced by the Poilus. The latter fought on this land, from 1914 to 1918. France marks Armistice Day, the end of WWI. This year, the ceremony also commemorates the centenary of the French Cornflower. An urn topped with a cornflower, containing soil taken from 16 of the 139 First World War burial and memorial sites, will be symbolically placed on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier beneath the Arc de Triomphe. France celebrates November 11 as the end of the 1918 war. But the Allies sometimes have other traditions. While in Germany, we do not celebrate Armistice at all.
At the Hôtel des Invalides, the head of state unveiled the plaque in memory of the Alsatians and Mosellans who had fallen during the Second World War and incorporated them by force. He then gathered in front of the statue of Georges Clemenceau in the Champs-Elysées.
