Former England Captain Smith Dies at 92
Former England cricket captain MJK Smith died at age 92 on Monday, Warwickshire County Cricket Club announced. The bespectacled batter, known as a Bears legend, passed away after an illustrious career spanning nearly two decades.
Known by his initials MJK, Smith played 50 Test matches for England and captained on 25 occasions, establishing himself as one of cricket's finest leaders. He was also a rare dual international, earning a rugby union cap against Wales in 1956.
His first-class career amassed close to 40,000 runs with 72 centuries across nearly two decades with Warwickshire. As chairman from 1991 to 2003, Smith oversaw acquisition of seven major trophies, including back-to-back County Championship titles in 1994 and 1995.
Warwickshire observed a moment of silence on Monday before day four of their County Championship match against Glamorgan. The club honored Smith, stating, "Once a Bear, always a Bear."
The Smith legacy extended through his son, Neil Smith, who also captained Warwickshire and earned one-day international honours for England. His influence shaped the club's identity across generations.
